stock 1970 honda 70h model high speed question - 08-24-2008, 08:59 PM

okay guys, i have read and read but didnt get the answers i wanted.

my bike is bone stock with no baffle thing in the muffler.

the bike runs around 40 on flat land with me on it. i weight 150 lbs. 35 uphill 45 downhill

my only question is. the bike is of course very torque and granny geared in 1st. i was wondering if you can change the gearing and maybe cut up the stock exhaust to make it a straight through design and maybe gain a bit.

i dont want to change the exhaust or the air cleaner because this bike is so clean i want it to stay looking stock. i change the filer element in the air canister to a free flow material so it may help a bit.

what does everyone suggest. by the way if it is not really possible and you are where you are staying that is fine also

by the way this is a STREET only bike. no trails so i dont need the climbing granny gear.

thanks cookie

CT70H sprockets are 14F and 44/45R. 44 to 47mph would be wound out. Obviously the heavier the rider, the lower the top speed.
You might consider going up a tooth on the front sprocket but, even that will only buy you 2 to 3 more miles an hour if the motor can lug it. A one tooth change in the front is roughly equivilant to a 3 tooth change in the rear and better yet is you don't have to modify the chain.

If you are ambitious, put in a mini monster cam, up your main jet to a #68, and richen your throttle needle to the second from the bottom (second richest position). I have a CT70KO and have that combo (with a free flowing KN air filter and stock exhaust) and I can hit about 48-50 on flat ground - given enough room - with the stock sprocket set ups. I bet if you did that and also worked the sprockets you might be able to break 50.

If you're going to play with gearing do yourself a favor and get a good chain breaker, and when you buy a chain and sprockets get a 120 link chain and some extra master links. Then you can swap out sprockets all you want 'til you find the combination that you like, and you won't need more than 2 master links. Just a thought.

Of course, that's easy for me to say, cuz I have 5 bikes that use 420 chain. I ought to be buying the stuff in bulk reels.

Free flow air intake makes a LOT of difference, so much that I had to jet it up. Straight exhaust made more torque*.
47 mph on level pavement, I'm 210# on a CT70K0

Make sure everything else is working as it should, timing set, valves adjusted and no leakdown past the valve seats or rings.
