Drum Brake Upgrade CT70 - 08-24-2008, 10:49 AM

Any sugguestions or reviews on aftermarket brake shoes to improve braking with stock style drum brakes on a CT70

I like to look of the stock wheel and hub and would like to retain my KO forks (dampining of this set up is less than ideal however I do think they are the cleanest design forks through the years).

I've heard horror stories of people having pads seperate/explode at higher road speeds. ie. 60mph plus.

Racerx gave some good press to Kitaco shoes in a recent thread, so they're probably another good option as well.

I think everyone should at least try disc brakes on these bikes just one time. I my opinion, they would never go back to drum-style brakes. But if you have to stay with drum brakes, I have used the Kitaco's and they seem to be good quality.

I have 4 minis with Disk brakes, 2 of them have front and Rear Brembos. Disks with good stainless braided lines stop you on a dime.

Brake shoes for CT70's.

Kitaco
Daytona
Ferodo

Ferodo's are the easiest to source here in the USA, then Kitaco, then Daytona. All are sloted pads and are much better then OEM. Just make sure you prep your drums and break in correctly.

I'd still like to stick to the drums to retain the look.
I'll order up a set of ferodos this winter and give them a try!

Thanks all,

Matt

That's one thing I have been disappointed with is brakes. I replaced the shoes and they still leave a lot to be desired. I forget where I got them. they were cheap. That's probably the problem I guess. You get waht you pay for. I did scuffed the drums up a little with some 80 grit paper just to take off any glaze. Still... I was surprised at how bad they were. Can the brand of pads really make that a big difference?? I'm sure the disks would be sweet but don't want to spend the $$ right now. Thanks.

I once built a machine that was used by Colt Industries (back when they were a subsidiary of Stemco, who make aftermarket parts for BIG trucks.) to determine the coefficient of friction in brake and clutch lining materials. Rest assured, the friction material on the shoes can make a huge difference.

One other trick for improving front drum brake performance - lube the cable. When they get sticky, feel goes out the window. Also, clean and lube the brake cam. It's worth doing when you're in there replacing the shoes.

Of course, I can be a little anal about these things.

Guys, all I'm saying is just give disc brakes a try, I promise you'll never look back. Don't you want the safest, most reliable braking system while your riding. Believe me, it took some time for me to see the light and spend the money, but I'm darn glad I did.
