Leaking oil from muffler/cylinder head connection - 12-29-2008, 08:28 PM

Good evening everyone,

One of my CT70's leaks a bit of oil from the insertion point of the muffler exhaust and the front cylinder head. It of course smokes a little when the oil touches the exhaust when riding. I have retightened the two bolts that connect the exhaust into the cylinder head housing and it reduced the amount of oil leaking out a bunch, probably about 75% or so reduction. I am thinking I need to replace the gasket that fits into the cylinder head. Is there anything else I should be looking for, or doing, while I am working on this? Thanks for your help.

The original exhausts have two half moon spacers that go between the collar and cylinder head. You have those installed? Did you use a new crush gasket? Did you check your valve lash gaps? If it's leaking that much oil, odds are your piston rings are pretty worn. Have you done a compression check?

My compression is real good and the engine starts and runs good also. These spacers you mention, are they external of the cylinder head?

They fit up inside the exhaust port. Here is a diagram. They are part number 1.

"XSIVE" hit the nail on the head. Item #1 in the diagram is exactally what I was describing. Also make sure you have a new crush washer (item #
5)

Let me know if you need help finding these. I have a couple places I buy stock parts online.
