Seat Pan - 12-26-2008, 08:42 PM

So I bought this early ST50, The seat pan is perfect, no cracks or rust and is straight.cant tell if it is the same as a KO pan, has the shock arches and has the chrome buttons, its obvious the foam has a different contour, any ideas? also does anyone know much about these bikes? German model, helmet fenders, it had turnsignals on the end of the bars by the grips, CT90 style speedo in kph, round Stanley tailight, etc., any info would be appreciated.

The only differences with ST seat pans are the short strips of angle reinforcement welded to the topside & siderails, on both sides, where CT70 pans typically begin cracking. That continues right up through current OEM production ST70 pans. I can only guess that Honda expected ST models to see more two-up riding as a road-oriented bike than the more offroad-oriented CT.

ST Dax models were produced in far more flavors & colors than CT70 models. North America got the more familiar CT and was/is a much more homogenous market. STs mostly went to EU countries & Japan. That presented quite a patchwork of regulations with which to comply. The reason for a 49cc variant was to get around strict licensing & registration requirements; 49cc & smaller qualified as "mopeds". ST models, in general, were produced in smaller quantities than CTs, and ST50s are probably among the rarest. There is no such thing as a factory original CT50.

Thanks Racer, I am going to use a few parts off the ST but for the most part am going to part it out. will probably use the seatpan to build a seat for my KO, and a few small parts to retro my '91, and ebay the rest.

If the bike is complete and in relatively nice shape you might try ebaying it, as-is. You never know, there may be a completist collector out there somewhere, eager to add a German type II or III ST50 to his collection. Seems a bit sad when a relatively rare bike gets parted out, but I do reckon that's a call you get to make...ownership, in this case, is 10/10ths of the law. Still, the EUR is kicking the greenback's arse for the moment, and the EU is where an ST50 is going to have its largest market.
