Ct70 spark help. -
12-22-2008, 01:21 PM
Ive searched through all of the previous posts and have found no awnsers. I just got my first ct70. Its a 1979. I have spark to the end of the spark plug wire. But not through the cap. When i pull the cap off and hook up the spark plug direct to the line still no spark. I grounded the spark plug wire to the motor and it does spark to the motor. But it will not go through the spark plug? Any ideas on why? Is the cap some special cap? You would think the cap could be bypassed and go straight to the spark plug wire but i tried that and it didnt work. PLEASE HELP!!!
THANKYOU |

Both can go bad and it sounds like yours has. Just replace the cap with a standard NGK cap and put in a new plug and see what happens. If the insulator on the plug is broken, your plug may not fire at all or can be very erratic. You can get both at DrATV OPERATES HERE

I dint know how? I worked on this thing for two days trying to get spark. I pulled the coil and sanded the frame. Pulled all wires and reconnected. Still nothing? Then i decide to try and pull the flywheel. I get the nut off but i couldnt get the flywheel to come off. I attemped to use a rubber mallet to get the flywheel off with some good solid smacks. Finally i am so fed up i call a mobile mechanic. He gets to my house. I show him what i have done. I pull spark plug ang cap. Put wire directly to the motor and got spark. Then put plug on the wire and BAM!!!!! FIRE!!! i dont know how? But its there now. I guess banging around by the flywheel jolted somthing back together. So, that problem is solved!! Now, i am only getting a top speed of 25 mph? Shouldnt it go faster? I thouroghly cleaned out the jets on carb with a very small wire like i read on previous posts. But still only 25 to 30 mph. It has 3000miles on it . Is that a lot. Thanks to everone here i have my firsh Running ct70!

If you want to pull the flywheel you will need a special flywheel puller tool. Its not expensive, but it is necessary to remove the flywheel without damaging the end of the crankshaft. The flywheel fits tightly on a taper on the crankshaft. Once the nut is removed, the puller is needed to break the flywheel loose. Using a standard jaw type puller will ruin the threads on the end of the crankshaft necessitating its replacement

The first thing you better do is get yourself a good repair manual, or download or look at the one online, here in another section of the forum. As far as only going 25mph you may have your choke on. A new set of points and condenser would not hurt either. Your carburetor may also need to be adjusted by playing around with the air screw and idle screw. Your intake and exhaust valve settings should be checked as well. Do not attempt any of this without referring to a good manual.
