Newbie with a 69 CT70 carb question - 11-16-2008, 07:40 PM

Hi

Got a great deal this week and couldn't pass it up. Bike is in great shape and starts on the first kick. Problem is that the bike will run with choke on but when i turn the choke off the bike revs up as if the throttle is pegged. I cleaned the card and the low speed jet was clogged. I fixed that and carb seemes to function correctly but has zero throttle control. Did I miss something when i assembled it? Cable is connected and the needles moves up and down. I'm stumped. I'm told it should have a Type I carb but this appears to be a Type III. It has 7HA on the flange. Not sure if the carb is right. Note: after i first cleaned the carb the throttle worked as designed but the jet got clogged after it ran for about 3 minutes. After I disassembled the carb and cleaned it again is when the trouble started. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Glad to be part of the forum. I had one of these when I was a kid. Now my daughter has one!!

Thanks

Frank

If everything is in fact connected correctly than I would suggest your main jet is clogged. It controls fuel flow at wide open throttle and also passes fuel up to the needle for mid throttle operation. I highly suggest you replace the fuel hoses as they break down and cause clogging. Does your bike have a steel or plastic tank? That could be another problem area.

plastic tank which i flushed out. New fuel lines. I had the carb apart 3 times so I got frustrated and put it away. I will once againtake it apart to see if its clogged again. I will pick up an in-line filter tomorrow. One thing i forgot to mentionis that the rubber connecter to the airbox is in bad shape and needs to be replaced. I wouldn't think that it would add to the problem as it wouldnt prevent throttle control but could that be an issue?

Also serial numer is CT70-1295** and engine is CT70E 129269. Would this make it a 1970 vice 1969 as the seller told me. He didnt have the title with him but it's in the mail. He was certain it was a 69 model year. Do the numbers jive?

This should prove to be a great winter project!

Thanks in advance.

Good Luck with the carb. I would tear it down and thoroughly clean it.

As far as the model year goes, look at the VIN plate on the steering collar. It has the Month and Year of manufacture.

Are you sure you have the throttle slide in correctly in the top of the carb? It has to drop all the way down. Turn it 180 degrees and see if it drops down all the way.

I think Hondaman is right as regards to the carb problem, and if its a 69 It will have a white tag on the neck but they don't aways have a month of manufacter like the rest of the ct's do. All the rest of the KO's have a black tag with a man. date.also a 69 has the brake and traillight wire running thru the top of the frame in the back under the seat, and the latter ones it runs out the bottom of the frame. a 69 muffler is different doesnt have the short straight pipe on end of it. there's some other things too. best is to post some pics so everyone can take a look and see what they think. Hope this helps ,Grant

On your current carburetor which of the following type caps is on it?

#1:

#2:

I may be wrong but I beleive when they changed the top sets (pictured) they also changed the length of the cable. If you have the first type top set (picture #1) it may be not be allowing the throttle slide to lower completely.

And as like some have told you be certain you are lining up the slide as pictured.
#1 full length slot on the ride side of carburetor with notch that #2 is pointing to.

More carb info - 11-17-2008, 09:26 PM

Carb has Cap in pic number 1. Slide is all the way flush. Bike actually ran and throttle work as designed after the initial carb cleaning but then plugged up the main jet again. Thats when the problems started. The pics that I've seen show the carb to be correct but a bought a Clymer manual at it shows the carb to be a type III. I assume it should work just fine as the guy I bought the bike from ran his grand kids around on it forever until it sat for about 6 months causing the gas to go bad and the carb to be all gunked up. I will take it apart to see if in fact the jet is clogged again.

No!! The slide should slide down inside the carb throat almost an inch past the top.

That would be impossible on this carb. The slide sits flush to the top of the carb. It's assembled correctly with the slot in the slide coinciding with the notch in the throat. Incidently i did clean the carb again this evening and it was spotless with both jet clean as a whistle. The float needle is correct as is the float setting. Bike will idle just fine but when turning the choke off the engine revs with zero throttle control. Cable appears to be operating correctly. even moved the clip to different slots on the needle.Nothing is making sense at this point and it's been a long day. May take a break and re-engage over the weekend. Gonna borrow my friends carb off his bike to see whats up. I rebuilt his a few months ago and its running sweet.

Thanks for all the inputs

Frank
