1970 ct70h light and battery problem - 09-01-2008, 02:02 PM

okay guys you all know my bike and that it runs and rides and such. with the key in the second position the headlight and the tailight with no battery and in the first position no lights work but the horn does. with a new battery in it still jsut the horn works with the first position. second position the lights and horn work but the lights are working off the stator still. they are not on at idle just when you give it gas they slowly get brighter.

i checked the fuse at the battery and it is good. here is my first problem, this is the battery i bought

eBay Motors: 6 Volt Motorcycle Battery HONDA CT70 XL100 CT125 6V 5AH (item 140261019397 end time Sep-03-08 0926 PDT)

it reads 6 volt on the battery but when i test it with a volt meter i get 12.3 volts.

please i need some help so i can figure this all out. does the lights work off the battery ever? i am confused!

The headlight can work without the battery, but I believe the battery is what changes the current going to the headlight from AC to DC (or maybe visa versa), which means that the bulb doesn't get quite the spike of AC charge and so prevents headlight bulbs from popping all the time. But many of these bikes' batteries are next to useless, and the lights still work. The horn is all battery, and so is the rear brakelight.

I think it's normal. My bike acts the same way.

1. OFF
2. ON (with out lights) brake lights still works
3. ON (with lights) head light only works with motor running.
