Tire life on ct 70s - 11-11-2008, 08:11 PM

How many miles are they good for? I need to get a general ideal for my tour.

If under 2 thou I might have to ship them ahead.

That's kind of tough to say, given most of the folks on here probably bought bikes that had tires go bad from dry rot rather than high miles. That being said, I"ve seen bikes with several thousand miles for sale with the original tires and they still have tread life on them.

I'd be more worried about a tire puncture on the trip than wearing out the tread. So I would carry a spare tube or two, just to be safe. They could be pretty hard to find out in Bumville, USA.

A 2,000 mile trip on a small, single cylinder engine, man your back is in much better shape than mine. So tell us about this trip.

Like mentioned, I would be more worried about Dry Rot. Check the sidewalls and see how hard they are or if any cracking. If there is and your tires become low on the trip, it could crack the side walls pretty quickly. If I was going to ride my bike on a 2 thousand mile trip, and I had any question at all to their safety, I would replace them.

On another note, I bet a road tire would be a better fit than the Knobies.

Neither of my bikes have 2000 miles on them over the course of the life time. You will qualify for the Iron Butt award!!!

Really weird Kharma - I was just yesterday talking to a friend about doing a long, ADV type ride on a mini of some sort. Last year 5 of us did a third of the Trans America Trail on vintage 1970's Yamaha enduros. What a hoot. More details on that trip HERE and HERE.

Get yourself a Spot locator so you can beam up your location to the net - works well. If you do, and need some technical assistance in setting up a SPOT blog, let me know!

You need to post pictures as you go, so figure on carrying a small laptop . . .
