Actually, pump prices in this part of the country were in the $1.40s by 1985. They began dropping in the late `80s, bottoming-out under a buck in the mid `90s. We were paying $1.06 for 93 octane "premium" as late as mid-2000, before it spiked to $2.56 right around peak summer driving season, then dropped back to $1.25. Since 2001, it's been a more or less steady climb...until very recently. Currently, seeing regular in the $1.40s here. Ten years ago, I kept wondering how long it would be before gas went above $2 and one would be able to snag a nice, late-model, V8-powered gas hog for 20 cents on the dollar (a replay of the early `80s "beating the high cost of living at 12mpg"). While few sane people would dispute the advantages of cheap gas, this time around you cannot help but wonder "for how long & at what cost?". Guess we should just enjoy it while we can. Six months from now, we might be referring to 12/08 as the "good old days", which would prove that nostalgia really "ain't what it used to be"
