Another thing that ticks me off is when transportation officials synchronize traffic lights so that the main traffic gets stopped at every light. This is done to control speed and wastes a tremendous amount of fuel. Traffic lights should be co-ordinated to move traffic in the most efficient way, to minimize fuel waste and road rage.

I'm a little bit of an enigma, as I believe in conserving natural resources and recycling - but I do not buy into "global warming", nor do I believe in government mandates (cap and trade, etc) to "fix" the problem. I bought a CT70 clone to save fuel, yet enjoy driving my turbocharged/intercooled Buick GN to keep me young! Interesting that the fastest, most powerful car I've owned has a speedometer that goes to 85, with 55 highlighted in bold...........

Mine is totally stock. It still has the original Eagle GT's (which are a bit dangerous for high speed driving now that they are 20+ years old!)

Back when it was new, it would pull high 13's - low 14's depending on the weather. If it was a cool, dry night - it seemed that your times were limited by the stock tires as it was tough to keep them hooked up - but the turbo loved cool, dense air! It'll pull 25 mpg on the highway if you can keep off the throttle, which is pretty good for a full framed automotive relic.

At this point in my life, a new VW Jetta TDI is in the works. (240 lb/ft of torque and 40+ mpg!)

Global warming is pretty well past debate. The cause is still as yet unproven. Rumor has it, dumbya wants to invade the sun

When those cars were new, the slick fix for those dreaded "Claybrook autograph" 85mph speedos was a 5/8 gear reduction. That allowed you to read mph from the kph scale and "extended" the warranty. I'd gladly trade the 85mph speedo for cheap gas, high salaries and a president with a three-digit IQ. I don't seem to recall being offered that choice, however

Nothing wrong with full-frame cars, they were built to last. Come to think of it, special interest cars hardly make a blip on the oil consumption screen. Most people drive their collector cars less than 2k miles annually, wouldn't matter if that's at 10mpg.

Talking about full framed cars...in a friends neighbour hood there is this awesome looking 70s US musclecar - called an XR7???

It looks like a car from Starsky and Hutch - radness personified!!!

Was the XR7 a cool car? Looks like a mid 70s build - massive stripe down the side with big fat tyres

The Mercury Cougar had an XR7 upgrade package and did resemble the Ford Torino ('74 model, I think) that was made famous on Starsky and Hutch. The '71 - '76 Cougars were very similar to the Torinos. The earlier ones in this particular series were offered with a 370HP 429cu.in. Super Cobra Jet engine. It'll pass just about anything on the road, except a gas station.

Cost me $2.25 to fill my CT70 clone today. I can get used to this little scooter!

As far as collector cars go, most start out as plain old daily drivers and a small percentage attain "collector" status. Today's daily driven hemi 300C might be tomorrow's collector car. Especially since we are essentially repeating history, with the 90's through current times closely mimicking the mid 60's through mid 70's in automotive history. Look at a 1965 Chevy Malibu compared to a 1975 Chevy Malibu. Then compare a 91 Toyota Camry with a 2007 Camry. Everything has become become larger and heavier, with little regard to fuel economy. All car manufacturers are guilty of this. The current Honda Civic sedan is about the same size as the Accord was back in the 80's. It has grown so much that Honda has introduced the Fit here in the US, which is about the size of what the Civic used to be. (I owned a couple of 79 Civics - great little scoot.... er .... cars....) As history repeats itself, we will see cars become smaller and less powerful. If anyone ever remembers driving a 70's era Datsun B210 or Toyota Corolla, this is not something that will be very pleasant. I must say that driving this CT70 clone is a lot like driving a B210 or old VW bug - redline it in every gear from a stop and then go WOT in top gear for "cruising".

I wonder if we'll see 4 cylinder Mustangs, Camaros and Chargers again............

I never thought I'd see the day it cost over $20 to fill my Triumph (MC) but it has a 5-1/2 gallon tank and uses premium. Took $21.50 at the last fill. Thank goodness for 46MPG.
