Is this worth fixin ?? ct 90 - 11-30-2008, 02:17 PM

Hello guys,

My Uncle had this in his shed and asked me to get it running. He thought the timing chain was broke. Turns out that the piston was stuck in the cylinder and other assorted problems. My ??? is if the crank has what appears to be rust crystalls on it are the bearings bad or is this what happens to a crank that has sat awhile. I dont really want to replace crank if I dont have to. It turns over fine. What do you guys think.

Dave

Rust on the crank bearings is not a great sign, and the bearing could be toast, which means splitting the halves. But if it turns and isn't making horrible grating sounds, and the connecting rod doesn't have a lot of play, it may be okay. Would hate to find that it isn't after putting it all back together, though.

Great shot of the carb bowl w/sludge!

That looks nasty. Took me a minute to realize that was a carb bowl. Me personally, I would think a new engine would be cheaper than rebuilding that one.

Throw a new piston and rings on it, quick hone on the cylinder and put a couple new valves and a grind on it. Clean up the carb and see what happens. After all it is a Honda! Probably have just a little over 100 bucks in it and your Uncle probably isn't going to ride it across country. Let us all know what you end up doing.
