Polishing aluminum - 09-06-2008, 12:53 AM

I want to polish up the aluminum handlebar holder on top of the triple tree. What is the best way to do this? Is there a chemical that helps in the process?

Polish - 09-06-2008, 10:43 AM

I bought a buffing kit to do my stuff. I rebuilt an engine recently and used Mothers mag & aluminum polish with a rag on the case halves. I was surprized at how well it cleaned the oxidation and brought out a shine.

Went to my local Autozone and picked up their Mothers mag & aluminum polish. Wow I was surprised. I rubbed it down about 5 times. Not much pressure needed really. The residue turns black as heck and after each polish it comes out better and better. Says not for Chrome though. I bought some Mothers Chrome polish for that. I should have taken a before picture. It was so dull I would have bought a new one if they were available.

Don't apply any Chrome polish though. The Mothers mag & aluminum polish worked so good it started to look like chrome so I applied some Mothers Chrome polish and it turned out dull. Did a fifth application of the Mag/Aluminum polish and it brough back the shine.

If you have anything more than slight scratches or imperfections, you can also use some 600 or 800 grit wet/dry sandpaper first. Follow that up with the Mothers for a mirror-like reflection.

Seconds on the Mothers Mag & Alum polish. I used it on my handlebar clamp & it worked wonders. Started with Never Dull, then over to the Mothers. A few of my friends use it for the tunnels on their snowmobiles & said it was the goods...works! Its doing a good job on the intake too....
