Newbie here. Found a great deal on a 1977 CT70 with a 1026 miles. It had been sitting in a basement since 1991 with the same gas in the tank. Anyway, cleaned the gas tank out per what I had read on this board about using white vinegar (worked great). Took the carb off and took it down to a little bike shop down the road. They took it apart and cleaned it up and it looked like new. Put it back on the bike put gas in it and it leaks a lot from the shutoff. So I do another search on the board and find out the gasket usually leaks. So off to the honda dealer and they have one. I take off the shutoff with the two little screw and pull off the shutoff and the spring washer and take out the gasket and put the new gasket in and put it all back together. At this point I'm like a little kid excited as all get out because I worked out all my other issues and had spark and the whole deal so know I'm ready to put gas in and start this bad boy. What do I find out. The darn thing still leaks like a sieve. So please O please somebody help this little kid at heart out. Anybody have any suggestions? I might just bring the whole bike to the shop (since I don't want to take the carb off just for a leaky shutoff) and say fix the leak.

I know its a long story I thought you all could relate.

No one has any ideas. Short version is that my carb leaks bad at the shutoff. I have replaced the gasket and still leaks. Anybody have an ideas?

The fuel lever on the carb can be assembled incorrect. Not by you but maybe by the previous owner. Take it apart and check if off is really off.

Check if the ring that secures the fuel lever hasn't been bent by overthightning and replace the small metal spring between the fuel lever and ring (it comes with a complete gasket set).

If it still leaks check the internals of the carb. Check the float for leaks and check if the float needle shuts off the fuel supply.

Buy a can of carb cleaner and clean all internal parts.

It's most likely of four possible things if the drain valve is closed and seated properly.

1. The float is not adjusted properly. Early CT70 float levels are 25/32'' from the upper lip of the carb with the float lightly seated on the float valve
2. The float valve is not seating correctly.
3. The float has a hole in it. Check to see if it floats correctly.
4. Pin hole leak in overflow brass tube in the lower float bowl assembly.

Usually when I have a problem like this & based on the fact that the carb has set for a length of time -- I would rebuild the carb . Probably needs it anyway .
Puchase a rebuild kit & throughly clean everything .

i had this issues for a while thing is it could be a few things mine in had to remove the gasket clean it and place it in perfect and gently make sure it fit in right while putting the top back on (pain in @$$) becuase it kept moving the tinies darn bit and messing it up. try checking the carb itself too look for even the slightest defect that could let gas slip through. or just look for a new carb....lol that isnt a fun option check a few things becuase sometimes the leak could actually be somewhere else and travel on the metal of the carb till dripping off the valve. thats just my 1 cent cuz if it was 2 itd be actually helpfull lol

I had the exact same problem, turned out to be #1 from hg's list above. IMHO, recommend not buying a new carb, as the answer is somewhere in that list, more than likely.

I had a simmiler problem,leaking thru the overflow. I rebuilt the carb,replaced the float, replaced that rubber packing on the shutoff valve. A couple of years later it started leaking. Re adjusted the float,no luck, replaced the packing,still leaked. I finally replaced that rubber packing in the valve again and took 320 wet and dry paper with a shot of wd40 laped the valve,where it contacts the packing. It looked fine when I started,but since I've done it,it has stopped leaking.

What's up? This guy is talking about his fuel "shut-off" leaking, but several of you guys are telling him how to solve "over-flow" issues. Am I missing something?
